Biographical information on more than 50 individuals buried in the historic Pioneer Cemetery in McDonough County, south of Macomb, Illinois. This cemetery dates from 1838 and suffers from severe neglect due to an isolated location in the middle of a farmers' fields and pastures. Many photographs and a few video clips document the condition of the cemetery.

A Note About Reading Old Tombstones
Old, hard-to-read tombstones can be read without damaging the stone. Please don't use garish chalk or damaging shaving cream to bring out the inscription. The best method for reading the face of weathered stones is by placing a thin sheet of aluminum foil over the inscription and gently rubbing over the surface. You can use a brush, sponge, cloth, or your hand--the foil will gently sag into the depressions of the original inscription and you can snap a photo that gives you beautiful detail of the otherwise unreadable stone. I have several examples of the "foil method" in the photos posted for the pioneer cemetery. See the label marked "grave photo" to browse through them. The aluminum foil method is the only method I advocate.
