Sarah Jane "Sally" (Venard) Rigg

Birth:     Jan. 2, 1820

Died:      Jun. 24, 1870
              McDonough County, Illinois

Sarah Jane "Sally" (Venard) Rigg was a daughter of John and Sarah (Wilson) Venard and the wife of Russell Rigg. Her cause of death was listed as a "fall" in the 1870 mortality index of Bethel Township, McDonough County which is linked to the federal census of that year.
She married Russell Rigg, 11/2/1845, in McDonough Co, IL. Their children were: Mary E. (1846); James Luther (1848); John T. (1850); Samuel B. (1852); William Dudley (1854); Ewell (1856); Andrew Nelson (1860); and Sarah Anna B. (1863).  This couple also lost one child in infancy (name unknown); that infant is buried in the Rigg Cemetery in Bethel Township.

The tombstone was located in March 2008, lying flat and in poor condition with much of the stone broken and crushed, but enough legible inscription remained to identify the grave.

Her husband, Russell Rigg, a life-long farmer, was a son of Samuel and Nancy Rigg. His father and mother were born in Maryland and South Carolina, respectively. Russell Rigg was born in Greenup County, Kentucky on June 7, 1821. The Rigg family removed to Sangamon County, Illinois in 1828. In 1835 they moved to McDonough County, after purchasing 240 acres located on section 1, Bethel Township. After Sally's death, he married Eliza Jane Lucas on 2/2/1871, and they had one son, George.  Russell Rigg died in Industry, McDonough Co, 1892; his second wife, Eliza, died there in 1891.
